Animal Cruelty Investigator Career Profile
Animal Cruelty Investigator Career ProfileAnimal Cruelty Investigator Career ProfileAnimal cruelty investigators must investigate reports of animal cruelty and enforce the laws related to such criminal acts. Duties Animal cruelty investigators are responsible for investigating accusations of animal cruelty to determine whether or not the claims are justified. Animal cruelty investigators may encounter many difficult situations such as animal abandonment, neglect, and abuse on a daily basis. Each case must be thoroughly documented so that it may be used as evidence by prosecution teams. If the claims of animal cruelty can be verified the investigator may confiscate the animal and coordinate with local law enforcement offices to make an arrest in the case. While the majority of an animal cruelty investigators work occurs in the field while pursuing leads, they also do spend some time in an office setting to complete paperwork and compile case logs. They also may do some work as huma ne educators, providing information on animal welfare to the public. Investigators must have excellent communication skills and be able to interact with animal control officers, shelter managers, volunteers, rescue groups, humane societies, veterinarians, lawyers, and law enforcement agencies. They must also be prepared to work with pet owners that may be uncooperative or openly hostile during investigations. An investigator must be sure to take adequate safety precautions while working in the field, as they will be in close contact with unfamiliar and potentially abused animals. Animals may be injured, living in very poor conditions, or even deceased. The investigator must be able to assess the situation and act quickly to remedy it if possible through proper legal channels. Due to the nature of the job, some evenings and weekend hours may be required. Career Options Animal cruelty investigators may be employed by local or state governments, humane societies, rescue organizatio ns, and other related groups. Animal cruelty investigators can readily transition into a variety of leadership positions with humane societies, rescue groups, and government agencies. The skills of an investigator are also transferable to positions such as animal health inspector or police officer. Education Training An animal cruelty investigator will ideally have a degree in either criminology or an animal science related field. Some localities require basic police officer certification. While police training is not necessary for most locations, it certainly helps a candidates chances if they have some sort of law enforcement background before applying. Experience working as a veterinary technician, humane educator, dog trainer, or animal control officer is also a big plus, as it gives the investigator a good working knowledge of animal behavior. In addition to having a strong background in animal behavior, investigators must be familiar with many different species of animals, know first aid techniques, be well versed in animal care and nutrition, can use humane capture tools and techniques, and be able to follow proper investigation procedures. Aspiring animal cruelty investigators can gain valuable practical experience by volunteering at local shelters, humane societies, and other rescue-related organizations. The National Animal Control Association (NACA) offers certification as an Animal Control/Care Officer through completion of a two-level course (40 hours per level) and passing a written certification exam. Through December 2014 mora than 11,000 animal control officers had successfully completed the NACA animal control certification process. This is a valuable certification that enhances a candidates qualifications and employment potential. Salary According to data from the National Animal Control Association (NACA), animal cruelty investigators can expect to earn $50,000 to $85,000 in large metropolitan areas, $30,000 to $45,000 in mid-sized communities, and $12,000 to $24,000 in small communities. Job Outlook While the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not separate out animal cruelty investigators into their own category, it does include them in the more general grouping of animal care and service workers. The BLS survey results indicate that employment opportunities for all animal care and service workers will grow faster than the average for all professions, at a rate of approximately 11 percent, through 2024. Demand for animal cruelty investigators should continue to show growth, especially since the general public has become increasingly concerned with animal welfare and humane treatment issues. Media coverage has put a spotlight on animal cruelty in recent years, and communities have increased their response to animal abuse accordingly due to this pressure.

What Emotional Intelligence Isnt
What Emotional Intelligence Isnt What Emotional Intelligence Isnt Emotional intelligence has a nice ring to it. But, If tzu siche is any such thing as emotional intelligence (EI) or its associated emotional quotient (EQ), notlage only will it be very useful to know what it is, it will be important to know what it isnt. Historically speaking, a relatively new and fuzzy concept, EI has been interpreted in a multitude of ways, not all of which deserve to exist.Repeating the Mistakes of IQ HistoryIn part, as a backlash against a perceived elitist bias toward book-learnin IQ and, in part, as a back-up for those excluded by that elite, emotional intelligence and emotional quotient have become mainstream concepts and tools, however roughly framed and used. In their exuberance to fashion and wield behauptung concepts and tools, some EI proponents and commercial promoters have made mistakes that repeat those made in the early days of IQ testing and comparisons. As a result, the understanding and application of the new quotient on the block, EQ, has been flawed- plagued by some of the saatkorn errors identified and rectified since the comparably early era of IQ testing, e.g., the flaw of cultural bias and the mistake of failing to distinguish aptitude from achievement. For example, disadvantaged youths in the early 20th-century, presented with an IQ test analogy question like the following, would be virtually certain to be unable to do more than guess the answer polo is to snooker as a Royal fox hunt is to (a) regatta, (b) duck hunting, (c) the Kentucky Derby, (d) bee-keeping, (e) none of the above. Answer bDealing with Your DaughterNow consider this EI question what is the emotionally intelligent response to the following situation?Your daughter, who is 16, has been spending too much time away from the family, with a boy that you and your spouse see as totally unsuitable, especially because of his completely unacceptable religious beliefs and lifestyle choices. Should y ou(a) Display your disapproval through non-physical anger?(b) Display your disappointment through sadness?(c) Calmly discuss with her your family hopes, policies and expectations, as well as your concerns about the suitability of the boy?(d) Allow her to make her own decisions and limit your involvement to offering advice when she seeks it?(e) Take her into a courtyard and have her stoned to death for dishonoring the family by associating with an unrelated male who belongs to a different sect?If you are as egalitarian as the American ideal, you probably chose (c) or (d), while gasping at (e).The Cultural Relativity of Emotional IntelligenceExtreme though this example is, it makes the cultural relativity of emotional intelligence transparently obvious- a fact that is incorporated into some definitions of emotional intelligence, and a consideration that immediately raises a red flag regarding the eligibility of emotional intelligence to join the ranks of recognized innate and universa l intelligence measures. So before you congratulate or berate yourself for a low EI online score, e.g., on the emotional intelligence test at the popular Psychology Today website (http//psychologytoday.tests.psychtests.com/take_test.php?idRegTest=1310), take a closer look at the questions in any EQ test youve taken or seen. It will be nothing short of a miracle if there are none with a cultural, moral or ideological bias or some confusion of aptitude and achievement, the latter in the form of learned emotional skills, rather than innate ones. The Psychology Today test presents hypothetical situations, comparable to the one above, in which you are asked to choose between remaining calm or silent, displaying anger, etc., in the face of a specific provocation. Notably, other-cultural options like (e), above, are excluded from any consideration whatsoever, despite the fact that in some cultures neither alleging that such behavior is a crime nor punishing it so brutally is considered wacky . Worse, in those cultures (e) is not only the epitome of emotional intelligence, it is also recognized as profound, traditional and precious emotional wisdom. (Note It has sorely tested my emotional intelligence to criticize the same Psychology Today test that gave me a 98 percentile emotional self-awareness score. Anyway, no sour grapes analysis here.)The Rank Relativity of Emotional IntelligenceDespite our cherished egalitarian ideologies, the fact is that the right response may vary depending not only on the cultural situation, but on the relative rank of the participants When outraged by an enlisted mans namby-pamby attitude, General Patton was wrong to strike the weak-willed soldier, but a toned-down, yet nonetheless stern emotional response that would have been emotionally intelligent for Patton would have been, in virtue of the difference of rank between them, stupid for the enlisted man to dare attempt.Even dominant and deferential silverback gorillas grasp this difference in their jostling for rank in the troop hierarchy. Yet, somehow, perhaps under the influence of Western egalitarianism, some EI theorists have not, and have instead blithely assumed that the correct answer on an EI test is correct for all- irrespective of both culture and rank.Emotional Aptitude vs. Emotional AchievementTo put these issues into a recruitment perspective, imagine you are interviewing a Thai job applicant. You are both comfortably seated and in crossing your legs, you happen to point one of your shoes toward him. Since you are probably completely unaware of any emotional consequences, namely, his culturally-instilled discomfort in having a shod foot pointing at him, you would fail to display insight into the emotional consequences of your behavior. Does this mean you have to subtract points from your EQ? Of course not.You have merely revealed a limitation of your emotional-cultural achievement, not of any innate emotional-cultural aptitude. It means you have something to learn, not an innate limitation to bear. But since this can be learned, why call this kind of learnable understanding intelligence? Why not call it emotional skill?Perhaps it is because skill requires extra work, whereas intelligence doesnt- which is great for really busy people, like recruiters.

Time for Natural Building Techniques
Time for Natural Building Techniques Time for Natural Building Techniques Time for Natural Building Techniques?Proponents of the back-to-the-land movement in the 1960s and 1970s aspired to build their own homes using locally available resources and envisioned sustaining themselves off the land as well. The energy crisis later in the 1970s focused our attention on use (or misuse) of natural resources and the energy efficiency of our buildings, leading to substantial research into solar and other alternative sources of energy. More recently, environmental concerns have focused on our continued reliance on fossil fuels for energy, the impact of greenhouse gases, and the controversy over global warming. Certainly these recent issues have given rise to enhanced interest in renewable-energy sources, sustainability, and other ecologically-minded solutions. One such leidion is Natural Building, a sustainable building technique that is believed to minimize the environmental impact of our hous ing and structure needs. Natural building can be defined loosely as any building ordnungsprinzip that places the highest value on social and environmental sustainability. Natural builders emphasize simple, easy-to-learn techniques based on locally available, raw, renewable and recycled resources, ideally gathered from the site vicinity. Relying on Human Labor These systems rely heavily on human labor and creativity instead of on capital, high technology, and specialized skills. Natural building technologies can be applicable in nearly all geographic regions and climates. Materials of construction include adobe, cob, straw bale, rammed earth, and straw-clay. Alternative structures are also being built of recycled materials such as tires, aluminum cans, paper fiber, and bottles combined with cement or earth-binding agents. Parts of The Great Pyramids are made of earth.Natural building, in varying shapes and forms, can be traced back hundreds if not thousands of years. Adobe, used as t he primary building material in the Pueblo villages of New Mexico, is the most common example. In South Yemen, there are medieval earthen houses rising 13 stories high. Parts of The Great Pyramids and Great Wall of China are made of earth. Pueblo villages use adobe as primary building material.Proponents of natural building point to the gammeln housing industry as a major contributor to our ecological problems. They note that modern building systems depend on wood products and destructive mining techniques gypsum for sheet rock iron for hardware, rebar, and roofing lime and other minerals for cement. ReducingEnvironmental Risk Almost every material used in a typical modern building is the product of energy-intensive processing. Sawmills, plywood and chipboard factories, steel foundries, and the plants that turn natural minerals into cement by subjecting them to enormous heat all consume vast quantities of power, supplied either by coal and oil combustion, hydroelectricity, or nuclea r power. These manufacturing processes also release toxic effluent into the water and hazardous chemicals into the air. Natural building materials, on the other hand, pose few environmental risks and are readily available. They dont contribute to deforestation, pollution, or mining, nor do they depend on manufactured materials or power tools. Most natural builders also incorporate green building strategies such as sun-shading or other passive cooling techniques, passive solar heating, and geo-exchange heating and cooling into their natural building designs to increase sustainability and lower energy consumption. With all of these advantages, why hasnt natural building been welcomed with open arms into the mainstream building industry? One problem is that few people have experience handling and working with natural materials. Architects and builders are expert at working with cement, wood, and other traditional building materials, and while synthetic materials may have some undesirab le qualities, they are cheap, easy to make, and even easier to use. There is an entire building supply and aftermarket built around traditional materials as well. Building codes are another issue that has slowed acceptance of natural building. Building officials are most concerned with safety and security. Because both builders and building code officials have such little experience with alternative building materials, the entire permit process can be significantly longer and more costly. However, the intent of building codes is to ensure that materials are used safely and suitably, not to limit the use of appropriate materials. The burden of proof will be on the natural builders to ensure that materials are used safely and appropriately. Natural builders must also lead the education process for building officials, architects, conventional builders, and the general public. Affecting major process changes in any industry is challenging. However, the time just might be right for natur al builders to emerge from a subculture into the mainstream. Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications. Natural building can be defined loosely as any building system that places the highest value on social and environmental sustainability.

The Military Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP)
The Military Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) The Military Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) When you walk into a recruiters office, do not be nervous they do not immediately ship anyone out to boot camp. It takes time to get the paperwork processed, medical reviews completed, ASVAB scores loaded for every recruit. Typically, a recruit has many months before he/she joins and leaves for basic training. The program recruits will join as they wait for their ship date is the Delayed Enlistment Program while he/she qualifies medically, academically, legally, and passes the security clearance. Thats where the Delayed Enlistment Program (sometimes called the Delayed Entry Program) comes in. It is also called the Future Soldiers Program in the Army. Individuals going onto active duty, enlist first into the DEP. This is an actual enlistment into the inactive reserves, with an agreement to report for active duty (to ship out to boot camp) at a specific time in the future. Under current regulations, one can remain in the DEP for up to 365 days. A recruit signs a DEP enlistment contract that is legally binding. It says that you must report at the place and time stated or face being ordered to active duty as a Reservist. While in the DEP or Future Soldiers Program, you will be encouraged to join in activities at the local recruiting office including meetings and classes. Recruits may decide on the DEP so they can prepare to meet the height and weight standards or graduate from high school. Legally Getting Out of a DEP Contract Short answer - YES. But, you have to be ready to play hardball with the recruiters and stand firm with your reasoning. From the recruiters point of view, the work the recruiting office has done for you to this point will be wasted. As a result, you may have a few angry recruiters talking you back into the program and shipping out as scheduled. If an applicant who signed a DEP contract failed to show up to ship out to basic training, the military could order the individual to active duty. If the individual refused, the military could legally court-martial the individual. In reality, this never happens. It is the Department of Defenses policy that anyone can request to be released from the Delayed Enlistment Program, but the request must be approved by the Secretary of that branch of service. The policy is included in DOD Directive 1332.14. Consequences of a DEP Entry-Level Separation Discharge A DEP discharge is officially known as an Entry Level Separation (ELS). An ELS is not characterized. Its not Honorable, its not General, its not Under Other Than Honorable, its not anything. DEP Discharges do not result in a RE (Reenlistment Eligibility) Code that will prevent joining the same (or another) military service in the future. If you are not ready or prefer to go to college first, you can get out of DEP, but be prepared to have the recruiters saying you cannot do it or other warnings and threats. Sometimes this happens as usually, an ELS with a recruit is burning a bridge with that recruiter staff - at least for the short term. But they are legally bound to let you go after you produce a written letter to the recruiting commanding officer. Minor Negative Issue With ELS from DEP A DEP discharge has one negative effect: If you are discharged from the DEP, and later want to enlist in that same service, you will require a waiver. While waivers are usually granted, you may lose certain benefits, such as the ability to chose what job you want, or what date you will ship out to basic training. A discharge from the DEP has no negative effects if you later wish to enlist in a different military service- only if you wish to enlist in the same service that discharged you from the DEP. DEP Discharge and Citizenship There is a federal law (8 USC, Section 1426), which states that if an immigrant alien, living in the United States, refuses military service on the basis of not being a U.S. Citizenship, they forever relinquish their right to become a U.S. Citizen. The Navy requires non-citizen recruits entering the DEP to acknowledge this law in writing. However, if they drop out of the DEP for any other reason than not being a citizen (for example, to join a different service, to attend college, or even just because they changed their minds), this law doesnt apply. DEP Discharge Procedures All requests for discharge from the DEP need to be in writing. The letter must clearly state that you are requesting to be discharged from the DEP, and state your reasons why. While one can use any reason at all, its best to use one of the reasons that are specifically mentioned in the recruiting regulations. These reasons are: Apathy or Personal ProblemsFailure to Graduate High SchoolHardshipDependencyMarriageMedical disqualification or psychiatric disorder (Note: Using this reason may preclude later enlistment if you change your mind, or enlistment in a different service)PregnancyAcceptance of scholarship or pursuit of higher educationEnrolled in training to become or receive an appointment as an ordained ministerDetermined no longer qualified for an option for which enlisted in the DEP and declines alternate.Enlistment misunderstanding Enlistment in another serviceErroneous enlistment (Note: Using this reason may preclude later enlistment if you change your mind, or enlistment in a different service)Conscientious objector Recruiters themselves do not have the authority to discharge individuals from the DEP. Only Recruiting Commanders have that authority. Your letter needs to be addressed to the Recruiting Commander (but you can give the letter to your recruiter). Your recruiter is required by regulation to forward the letter to his/her commander. The Recruiter is required to try and talk you out of it. This is known as re-selling. Regulations prohibit the recruiter from using threats such as Youll go to jail. Recruiters who are caught using such tactics can be punished under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Some recruiting stations have those requesting a DEP discharge meet with the recruiting commander or a discharge board, where you will be pressured to change your mind. Such meetings are not mandatory. DEP Discharge Processing Most DEP discharge requests should take no more than about 30 days to process. In the few cases where the request is delayed or disapproved, you will normally be discharged from the DEP automatically anyway, shortly after the shipping date arrives and you fail to ship to basic training. You cannot be in the DEP for longer than 365 days, so at the end of a year, you are automatically discharged from the DEP, even if the service fails to do a voluntary discharge, or fails to discharge after the shipping date has come and gone. Your DEP discharge request approval or denial should be in writing. You will not receive a DD Form 214 (record of discharge) for a discharge from the DEP. You will instead receive a simple, short letter stating you have been discharged from the DEP Program. Recruiter Ethics What should you do if a recruiter (or even a recruiting commander) uses unethical tactics to try and intimidate you, or to delay your DEP discharge request? First and foremost, you should use the chain of command. If its the recruiter who is trying to intimidate you or unreasonably delaying the process, request the name and phone number of his/her supervisor. Keep doing that until you get a satisfactory response. It may help to let them know that you are perfectly willing to make an official written complaint to the appropriate Inspector Generals (IG). The Recruiting IG officials are responsible for investigating allegations of recruiter misconduct, or violations of recruiting regulations and policies. The Recruiting IG addresses are: Reporting Unethical Behavior Air Force. Inspector General, Air Force Recruiting Service, HQ AFRS/CVI, Randolph AFB, TX 78150Army. Inspector General, U.S. Army Recruiting, USAREC, Fort Knox, KY 40121Navy. Inspector General, COMNAVCRUITCOM Code 001, 5722 Integrity Dr, Bldg 768, Millington, TN 38054Marine Corps (East Coast). Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, SC 29905Marine Corps (West Coast). Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego, CA 92140Contacting Your Congressperson. If the recruiter, or recruiting commander uses unethical tactics, such as delaying the DEP discharge request process, then congressional intervention can be very helpful.

Reshaping Your Corporate Culture Post-Recession
Reshaping Your Corporate Culture Post-Recession Reshaping Your Corporate Culture Post-Recession Reshaping Your Corporate Culture Post-Recession Training Corner According to Entrepreneur magazine, Whether written as a mission statement, spoken or merely understood, corporate culture describes and governs the ways a companys owners and employees think, feel and act. As we slowly inch our way out of the economic recession, more and more organizations are coming to realize that their own company culture has shifted significantly. More specifically, what has been built over years has been left, in many cases, in a significant state of disarray. Non-existent bonuses, mass layoffs, heavier workloads and constant uncertainty have drained employee motivation, employee loyaltyand generated a fearful stance of the organization as a whole. Does this describe your organization, or parts of your organization today? If so, now is the time to act. Here are five factors you should consider in order to reshape and reclaim your company culture and re-enchant employees. Acknowledge Difficulties. The first thing you should do is gather your employees together and simply acknowledge the difficulties of the past few years. Tell them that management understands and appreciates the sacrifices that have been made, and that everything is being done to move the business forward. A good approach might be for every manager to have smaller group meetings with individual teams in order to have very open and honest discussions. It should be clear that there will been no repercussions for anything that is said. How is everyone feeling? Are there things that they believe should have been handled differently? Do they feel the organization is going in the right direction? Make sure your employees feel heard and know that you do understand the difficulties of the last years and are committed to moving beyond these with their help. Define and Implement Strategy with Employees. With the acknowledgement of difficulties and the encouragement to speak freely, the goal is that ideas and strategies will be brought forth. Most organizations have already been diligently working on defining a clear vision at very high levels. But this is the chance to truly involve employees in both the definition and implementation strategy of the organization. If they feel like they are being heard and are empowered to make it happen, there will be considerably more buy-in; this should result in a more positive overall organizational outlook. Make sure to clearly articulate the strategies and to make this a continual process. Prioritize Learning and Professional Development. In the climate of trying to do more with less, education and professional development as a whole took a backseat in most organizations. Nothing is more motivating than understanding that your employer values you enough to invest in your development. Think about certifications, or experts you could bring into your organization to speak to your team. Involve them fully in the in the process and ask them for ideas about what they would like to pursue from an educational standpoint. Reinstate Bonuses/Perks.For some organizations, this may not be possible to do. However if there is any room to maneuver, the organization may want to seriously consider moving in this direction. One could argue that by not reinstating some form of bonuses you could be worsening the current company culture. If employees believe that the economy is turning around, as many economists have been publically asserting for several months now, and the organization continues to hedge on reinstating bonuses, it may further the perception that the company simply does not value its employees. And remember, these are the same employees that have stood with the company through difficult times. Essentially, the belief is that a form of bonus reinstatement should boost employee productivity /hr/hr-best-practices/workforce-management/employee-performance-management/employee-productivity.aspx and morale, which will be well-worth the financial cost in the long run. Keep Promises. If management openly states that they will do something, they must follow through. Now more than ever, employees will be following the promises that are made and there will be little forgiveness for broken ones along the way. The only way to rebuild that trust is to show that you are reliable and truly committed to following through on your word. Regardless of where your organization stands at the moment, it is imperative that deliberate steps be taken to either enhance and foster an already positive corporate culture, or, in many cases, work towards rebuilding one that has been shattered by the last few years. Ignoring this could prove disastrous to your overall business strategyand ongoing success.

Thats Really Interesting Now Take it off Your Resume
Thatâs Really Interesting ⦠Now Take it off Your Resume Thatâs Really Interesting ⦠Now Take it off Your Resume As a resume writer you tend to run up against the same issues on a regular basis. One of the most common challenges is working with a client who has a very diverse background, or who has taken a career detour. This is perfectly possible to address, but every now and then, I work with a client who truly believes that all those experiences are equally valuable in getting their next job. Sometimes, itâs hard for this person to accept that the year they spent teaching scuba diving wonât help them in their quest to secure a marketing role. âI learned how to deal with adversity,â theyâll say, âand I had to fend for myself in a new culture. Surely thatâs valuable?â Perhaps it should be, but itâs not. The dirty little secret about recruiting Hereâs the thing: Iâve managed recruiting in the past and the truth is that when youâre filling a new position, youâre not necessarily looking for the best candidate. Youâre looking for the least risky candidate. If youâre an HR manager or recruiter working internally, or an external headhunter who has been appointed to fill a specific job, you have been charged with finding someone who fits a certain set of criteria. As you sift through resumes, you are looking for someone who exactly meets what your boss or the hiring manager asked you to find. This is because you want to look good. Ideally, you want each of the resumes you choose to be such a perfect match that the hiring manager slaps you on the back (metaphorically speaking of course) and tells you what a fantastic job youâve done and hopefully goes on to say how youâre way better than all those deadbeat recruiters who came before you, and by the way why donât you have a raise? That means that that the average HR manager or recruiter is looking for people with a straightforward career chronology that perfectly matches the job theyâve posted. What if you donât have that? If you donât have that, because you took a year off after you left your last marketing job and then spent the next year teaching scuba diving and working as a waitress in the evenings, should you just give up? Câmon. You know me better than that. Of course not! But what you do need to do is to sift through those experiences and decide which ones are going to hurt rather than help. Your resume needs to tell a story Have you ever noticed how when someone coughs in a historical TV drama or movie, it always presages death? You hear that cough and you think âoh no! TB!â Of course people suffered from normal coughs in the olden days, but a scriptwriter only puts in the things that matter to his story, so he isnât going to show little Timmy getting the flu, spending a week in bed and then feeling better. No, if Timmy coughs, it means that heâs going to die. End of story. The same applies to your resume. You must be careful not to include a cough unless itâs TB. Or to put it another way, donât include a job or details about an experience unless it makes a direct contribution to the story youâre trying to tell. If you do need to include unrelated experience â" for example because you spent the last 3 years caring for a sick relative and donât want people to think you were being idle mention the experience briefly and position it as a detour from your ârealâ career. The truth is that if you have a varied background, or have taken a detour from your ânormalâ career, you will need to disguise that detour as much as possible. Itâs simply not possible to weave it into your story without veering that story off course â" and thatâs true even if you find the very best resume writer in the history of resume writing. We canât do it and, if weâre honest and ethical, we wonât try. Photo © Soleilphoto | Dreamstime Stock Photos Stock Free Images

How to talk about your salary with your coworkers
How to talk about your salary with your coworkers How to talk about your salary with your coworkers I recently got a call into the Bossed Up podcast hotline from Nicki. The message she left was a little garbled, but the basic gist is this: her boss was livid with her for discussing her salary at work. Now, like a true Bossed Up community member, Nicki had negotiated her salary, so her starting hourly rate exceeded some of her colleagues, who were doing the same work for less. So naturally, when her colleagues found this out, they were pretty upset, too.In this particular case, it just so happens that Nicki wasnât sharing her salary at work. Her boss was incorrect in her accusation and her coworkers had found out some other way. Regardless, it got Nicki wondering: was there anything explicitly wrong about discussing salary at work, after all? If she had been the one to share her salary, was it fair for her to be reprimanded for it?Can I talk about salary at work?In a word: yes. As HR company Insperity put it in a recent blog post:Can your employees discuss their salarie s or wages with their co-workers? Yes. Even if you have a company policy against it? Yes.Turns out, the freedom to discuss your salary at work is a protected right under federal labor law. The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 protects your right to discuss the conditions of your employment, including issues related to safety and pay, even when youâre not protected by a union. The act was intended to protect collective bargaining activities like finding out what your colleagues are making, so youâll have a stronger case for negotiating your own pay.In fact, companies that have policies on the books forbidding such discussions risk getting it trouble with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), an independent federal agency that exists to protect the rights of private sector employees. In 2014, President Barack Obama took executive action to bring added visibility to this issue and formally forbid pay secrecy policies amongst federal contractors as well. Why talk salary with coworkers?Talking about salary with colleagues can be uncomfortable, since thereâs such a taboo about discussing money matters, but itâs an important step towards achieving equal pay for equal work. Until pay transparency becomes the norm, we can help each other out by sharing what weâre making with our colleagues to more easily spot discrepancies and discrimination. One barrier, however, stems from how we think of our own financial worth. Too many people I talk to wrongly consider their salary a reflection of their inherent worthiness, a statement about their skills, experience, or value. Iâm tempted to shout, âItâs not about you! Itâs about market economics! Itâs about the position youâre in!â At the end of the day, if we can all detach our self-worth from our salaries a bit more, itâll become easier to talk turkey with our colleagues.Because the more secrecy swirls around our compensation conversations, the less power we all have as individual workers. Knowledge is power. So when we can talk honestly about pay with colleagues â" especially our white male colleagues who may benefit from privileges theyâre not even aware of â" the more we can identify wage discrimination when itâs happening to us.Ok, but how do I talk about salary?Asking about money outright can be tough, so one trick Iâve picked up along the way is to ask for your colleagues to confirm or deny. For instance, you might volunteer your salary first and ask âDoes that sound about right to you?â by way of comparison.Or, letâs say youâre interviewing for a promotion to become a manager. You might ask a fellow manager about the kind of salary you should expect by saying, âIâm seeing salaries for this kind of position ranging from $65,000 to $70,000 â" does that seem accurate to you?âThis way, even if your colleague isnât comfortable sharing their salary outright, they can help you identify if your expectations are on point or way off.

How to Write a Knockout Career Summary
How to Write a Knockout Career Summary How to Write a Knockout Career Summary If you're not familiar with the term "career summary," it's those few lines or bullets at the top of your resume directly under your name and contact information that tell an employer who you are. Some call it a career profile or executive summary, among other things. Before we go on and talk about what it is, let's talk about what it's not. It is not an objective statement. There is a very important distinction between the two. If you've been in the workforce for a long time, you're probably more familiar with an objective. That's old news. An objective would tell an employer what you were looking for. Employers now receive so many job applications that they expect you to do a bit more work to tell the employer that you are what they are looking for.[See: 25 Best Business Jobs for 2017.]Here are some examples of strong career summaries for three different backgrounds. They do not have to be in sentence format; some people prefer to use bullets and that's OK. Keep it short and simple either way, as a long career summary will likely not be read. "Award-winning executive assistant with over 10 years of experience directly supporting senior federal government executives. Employs exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities to deliver strategic plans and improve processes. Adept at change management and strategic communications.""Expert project manager with 12 years of experience in health care nonprofits leading program development, community outreach and the design and delivery of educational content. Acknowledged for event management skills and ability to inspire teammates.""Versatile statistician with 20-plus years of experience in health care, pharmaceutical and market research firms, developing creative solutions to complex research questions using SAS and other tools. Recognized for communication ability, concise writing skills and for proactively tackling challenging problems."What are the key elements of each of these?[See: Tips for Surviving a Care er Transition.]Description. The opening line is a summary of each person's background. It indicates their profession or role, how many years of experience they have and the industry or industries in which they've worked. If you've won awards, don't be afraid to say so right off the bat! This is not something everyone has under his or her belt, so it will help you stand out. Just make sure you also list your awards in a separate section of your resume under work experience. Even if you don't have awards to speak of, use words like "expert," "versatile" or "accomplished" to describe who you are. Depending on the job you are applying to, you can also change the title (e.g., "executive assistant" to "administrative assistant").Demonstrate Value. Your first or second sentence should tell the employer the value you bring to them. In the second example, we understand the person has experience leading program development, community outreach and the design and delivery of educational content . The employer will immediately understand this person can use those same capabilities on the job with them. Here's how to figure out what to include. Look at the job requirements â" often called "minimum qualifications" or "basic requirements" across several job postings that you plan to apply to. What are they looking for? Hopefully there is a common thread, but if not, create several career summaries to fit each one and give you some practice. The first sentence is likely to stay the same for each, but the value you offer may change. Also, maybe instead of the term "community outreach," they use the term "external relations." Make those changes, because an applicant tracking system (ATS) will look out for specific terms. In other words, be sure to tweak your career summary to align your background with the job requirements.[See: 10 Ways to Perfect Your Personal Brand.]Separate Yourself. In the second and third examples, you see the words "acknowledged for" and "recognized for." A nother term you may wish to use is "known for." The goal of this part is to state why you are unique. In other words, what makes you different from your colleagues? Think about what you've noticed over time as well as feedback you've been given by managers or peers. This gives you a key opportunity to address some of the job requirements from a posting, as well. If the requirements state "strong writing skills," "proactive" and "problem-solver," and that describes you perfectly, you might use a sentence like the final one in example three above. The bottom line: You need a career summary, and it should be specific rather than filled with cliched words and phrases. It should cover what you personally can bring to the employer and be aligned with a posting's job requirements. Taking these steps to build your summary will enable you to be leaps and bounds ahead of the crowd. The 25 Highest-Paying Jobs That Don't Require a College Degree

The ABCs of Boss Gift Giving
The ABCs of Boss Gift Giving The ABCs of Boss Gift Giving Business etiquette rules do not require you, or any worker, to give a gift to your boss for any occasion. In fact, giving a gift when its not necessary can appear as if you are trying to buy your way into your bossâ good graces. And, giving an inappropriate gift to your boss could make your boss feel uncomfortable. However, if you feel its imperative that you give your boss a gift (i.e., if you dont your boss will hold it against you- a good indication youre working for the wrong boss) or, you just want to give your boss a gift, you need to know the guidelines. Consider a Group Gift First For birthdays and holidays, consider giving a group gift instead of a gift just from you. A group gift takes the pressure off of you if youre on a tight budget. Also, you may not know your boss well enough to pick out the right thing. If someone else is already coordinating a group gift, the best approach is always to participate in the group. Of course, if your boss gets a group gift from everyone in the department and you dont chip in, it will reflect poorly on you. Be Discreet If you do give a gift by yourself, deliver it privately without making a show in front of other employees. Trying to show off or out-gift other workers will only rankle your colleagues. So, be a team player (not just when it comes to work projects) but with gift giving as well. The one reasonable exception might be if you and your boss are friends outside of work and you want to do something extra special to acknowledge the personal side of the relationship. If this is the case, then give the gift to your boss outside of the workplace instead of at the office. Aim to Please, Not Impress Keep the gift simple and sincere, and relatively inexpensive, and stay away from giving personal items such as perfume or cologne. Also, when you give over-the-top gifts, it puts pressure on the recipient to respond in kind. If there is something, your boss really would like that is more than $25 then get a co-worker to go in on the gift with you. As a rule, Expensive gifts are always better given (and received) when coming from a group. Never Give Cash as a Gift Cash gifts send the message that it was a last-minute decision and that you dont care enough to get to know your bosses tastes or interests. Another reason to never give your boss cash is that small amounts seem trivial and obligatory and large amounts seem gratuitous or can appear that you are trying to get into your employers good graces. Unless you are giving out bonuses from your company to your employees, never give cash as gifts. A gift card is appropriate to give to your boss, but even then, put some thought into it- dont give your boss a gift card to a coffee house if they dont drink coffee. Don't Give Promises or I.O.U.s Never give favors, offers to take your boss privately to lunch or dinner, or I.O.U.s. Youre better off buying a greeting card and hand-writing something meaninful- which will stand out in todays digital world. Remember, your boss may have authority over you at work, but they are still human. People like to be remembered and acknowledged.

RoCo Finds the Perfect Temperature
RoCo Finds the Perfect Temperature RoCo Finds the Perfect Temperature Its tough when you differ on how hot or cool the office or living room should be. Whos going to be forced to wear a sweater or who will be sweating bullets? If only you were around the kind of people who would always put your individual comfort first. Well, people may not be willing to do that, but a robot? Just maybe. With the creation of RoCo, sponsored by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), the hope is to reduce energy significantly through a moving air conditioning and heating system for personal comfort. Lets Get Comfortable There was a lot of analysis done to understand how people perceive thermal comfort and that analysis guides us on where we should be doing cold or hot air towards a person and at what speed and in what direction, explains Prof. Vikrant Aute, Associate Research Scientist Center for Environmental Energy Engineering at the University of Maryland, and a key member of the RoCo team. Then comes the hardware part. Demonstration of a RoCo prototype. Image: University of Maryland The first aspect is the robotic platform itself, which moves and follows a person. It needs to be flexible and nimble enough to roll on any surface and be able to deal with obstacles, Aute says. We have the RoCo device where one version were working on is supposed to be cloud connected where Wi-Fi comes into the picture. The nozzle also stays on a person in a particular direction. Our thermal comfort analysis found that to keep a person cool we need to blow cold air at an appropriate temperature toward areas of the neck, wrist, elbows, and the torso, he says. And if you want to keep a person warm then you blow air towards someones ankles so air rises up and makes a nice thermal plume around the person. The nozzle is going to adjust automatically based on this. Of course, not everyone runs at the same temperature as it is. We are also working on particular variable technology to sense the body temperature of the person, he says, And were looking at cloud-based thermal comfort algorithms to take the body temperature and actually find out if the person is thermally comfortable or not. Face Recognition Face detection is also a technology that theyre trying to employ. This can be used to adjust the direction of the nozzle and air temperature and speed of velocity in which you blow air, he says. It could be possible for other scenarios as well. Think if this was used in a car and you never had to touch a vent again. The savings to heating and cooling with the system can be as high as 30 percent and ARPA-E wants the cost to the consumer to be in the two digits, he says. How have people taken to it? Ro-Co was put on display at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit earlier this year, he says, and the reactions included many of wonder. There were a lot of smiles and many asking how they could get one, he says. Its encouraging where were headed. Eric Butterman is an independent writer.
